Best of the Gold Coast: Alto Cucina & Bar in Broadbeach

This past weekend was the Blues on Broadbeach music festival! In case you didn't know I'm originally from Mississippi (USA). I grew up very close to the Delta...I've been to the BB King Blues Club in Memphis more times than I can remember.... I would get ready for school each morning with the sounds of Robert Johnson playing on the radio. Let's just say I grew up with the blues. I've been a bit homesick lately so I jumped at the opportunity to immerse myself in the familiar sounds.

Oh, and the fact that Darrell just happens to be Johnny Diesel's number one fan kinda meant we HAD to go. This is truly a great time to be in Broadbeach. If you've never been to the festival I highly recommend it. The atmosphere is so lively and fun. We danced our way around the streets of Broadbeach the entire day.But what truly made this weekend an exceptional experience was the FOOD! There is no shortage of incredible restaurants in Broadbeach. We love the dining scene. We were lucky enough to get invited to check out Alto Cucina & Bar in Broadbeach. This is a great place to grab breakfast, lunch or dinner if you are in town for Blues on Broadbeach. Alto Cucina is right in the center of the action. We went on Saturday at around 11:30. We were overjoyed when we learned how close Alto Cucina was to the festivities. We enjoyed our lunch while soulful blues music wafted through the air.

Interesting enough the place wasn't very busy at all. The staff were very surprised telling us that during the festival they are usually jam packed. I think it was due to the large amount of festival/events that were going on on Saturday. We're not complaining the atmosphere was very relaxing as we sunk into our booth anticipating an awesome lunch at Alto Cucina.Alto Cucina is only a couple minutes from the beach. They've recently undergone a major renovation to give it a fresh, modern look. The place is now decked out in warm timbres and amber lighting. They specialize in Mediterranean tastes, share plates, tasty breakfasts, long lunches, delicious dinners, decadent desserts, and luscious cocktails. The majority of the dishes are designed to be shared. They also have gluten free options available. They consider themselves "City style meets beachside location" & we agree. They celebrate their 10th birthday in October of this year.

Now onto the food....for our entrees we enjoyed crispy pork belly with spiced date puree, and walnut praline - and fish tacos which consisted of cured barramundi, avocado, creme fraiche, tomato, and red pepper salsa...

The pork belly is a MUST TRY. You will not be disappointed with this entree choice. I would have happily taken a larger version for my main. The pork was beautifully cooked. So tender and juicy! The puree and walnut praline added a nice sweetness & crunchy texture to this salty, savoury dish.

The fish tacos were very refreshing, and light. Great starter if you are seeking a light lunch. All the ingredients were very fresh. The tortilla was perfectly toasted. We folded these bad boys up and quickly devoured them!

For our mains we had pan roasted chicken breast stuffed with moreton bay bugs, confit garlic, served with quenelles , baby spinach, and sweet corn puree- and "The Alto" pizza which was made up of garlic prawn, bacon, chicken, onion, mushroom, sun-dried tomato, roasted capsicum, napoli & mozzarella...

What a unique dish! As soon as I saw "chicken stuffed with moreton bay bugs" I knew I had to try it. I love chicken, and I also love bugs so it stands to reason that I should become infatuated with this dish (I AM).

We added a little sprinkle of pepper to the dish- perfection! This was a very sizeable dish. So filling! Golden crispy skin on the outside....juicy tender chicken on the inside. The wilted spinach and sweet corn puree complimented this dish so well.

"The Alto" was heaven on a place. You can't go wrong when you order something named after the restaurant your eating at can you?

This pizza was loaded with fresh garlic prawns, juicy chicken chunks, and my favourite thing in the world: bacon.

It's safe to say that Alto Cucina is our go to place for a great pizza when we are on the coast. The base was thin, and super crunchy- just how we like it!

And for dessert we had banoffee crumble which was made up of banana, salted caramel, and sweet rolled oats crust. 

We let the Alto Cucina team choose our dessert and they did not let us down. The banoffee is one of the best desserts we've ever had the pleasure of eating. We were so full after the previous dishes but the staff insisted we HAD to try it. Now we understand why. This dish is an explosion of beautiful flavours. I loved the crunchy oat crust. So good!
