Christmas in July: New Winter Menu Launches at Flaming Olive

It maybe chilly outside but the new winter menu at Flaming Olive in Fortitude Valley is red hot! If you are an insta-nut like us you've no doubt heard the buzz about this new restaurant. Flaming Olive specializes in modern Australian cuisine. They also have an extensive wines list and a variety of cocktails to wet your whistle.

The winter menu is innovative and jam packed with enticing flavours. This was our very first Flaming Olive experience. The restaurant opened only a few months ago so we were ecstatic when the owner, Gordon Yu, invited us to dinner. We visited Flaming Olive on a Saturday at around 5:30pm. Parking was simple as there is a secure parking garage located only a few minutes away. Flaming Olive even offers FREE parking when you dine with them. So make sure you get your ticket validated before you leave.

The restaurant was fairly quiet, and we were quickly shown to a table near the kitchen. Our waitress was perfect. Flaming Olive is a very intimate, stylish restaurant. The kind of restaurant you would expect a lot of couples to frequent. Don't you just hate when you are on a romantic date and the waiter (or waitress) keeps popping up at all the wrong times? The waitress at Flaming Olive had a sixth sense. She was attentive but not intrusive and only appeared when we needed her. 

We began our first Flaming Olive dining experience with Tender Pork Belly, puffed crackling, daikon, straw mushrooms, and rich pork broth...

This dish was very rich and flavourful. We cut the pork belly in half so we could each have a piece. The pork was incredibly tender. The puffed crackling added a wonderful crunch to this dish. It was a nice change from standard crackling which can be very greasy, and salty. The pork is served without the broth. The waitress drizzles it over the top at the table. The warm, rich pork broth was so savoury & delicious and really made this dish! 

For our second entrée we had cured Tasmanian salmon, imperial mandarins, petite radish, chard, and salmon pearls...

This dish was beautifully presented. A very light, and refreshing entree option. The salmon was fresh and complimented so well by the juicy, sweet mandarins. Very delicious. 

For our main we decided to do something a bit different...we don't usually opt for share platters but after we got a glance of the Suckling Pig we couldn't help ourselves. We also got a side of Truffle fries, with truffle infused salt & gooey egg... and confit baby potato's, pork floss, green peas, garlic yoghurt...

Just look at that suckling pig! Incredible. I didn't think it was possible but this dish tasted even better than it looked (and it looked pretty awesome). An extremely generous serving of pork. Even though we don't usually get share platters they are a fun option if you are on a date (maybe not a first date). We thoroughly enjoyed devouring this dish together. The pork was very tender, with golden crispy skin. The sweet apple & maltose caramel added a subtle sweetness that really cut through the fatty pork and complimented this dish so well. The Suckling Pig is our MUST TRY. 

The truffle fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned to perfection. Just the right touch of truffle salt. I really enjoyed the gooey egg. It was the perfect "dipping sauce". This is a large serving. Great for sharing!

The Confit potatoes were extremely delicious. I just loved the pork floss and garlic yoghurt. So good! Again this size was pretty large. It could easily be shared between 2-3 people.

Now onto the course I was most excited about....DESSERT. I had been enviously eyeing pictures of the desserts from Flaming Olive on Instagram. They looked amazing. One thing that's very unique, and innovative about the dessert menu at Flaming Olive is that they incorporate the winter theme into the dishes. They truly look like works of art. So you can imagine my excitement when it was dessert time!

For our dessert we had the Snowball which is fluffy cheesecake, citrus curd, white chocolate aero, and fresh powdered snow... and the Affogato which is your chose of liqueur with espresso coffee, and vanilla ice cream...

The Snowball was a dream. Flaming Olive is dessert lover's paradise. This dish was absolutely stunning. We were instantly transported to a winter wonderland. The cheese cake was so fluffy, and delicate that it fell apart at the fork. The citrus curd was beautifully paired with this dish and helped break down the sweetness so that it was not overwhelming. The cheesecake was so creamy, and sinfully delicious.

We finished off dinner with the Affogato. For our liqueur we chose "Tia Maria" since our waitress was from the Caribbean. This dessert is more like a drink. You mix the coffee and the liqueur in with the vanilla ice cream which comes in a glass. You can either spoon it out or drink it. A very comforting, soul warming dessert. It puts a smile on your face. A perfect end to a exceptional winter dining experience. Go celebrate 'Christmas in July' with Flaming Olive.
